Alternative schools in the U.S. serve approximately 575,000 students, often those who are at risk of academic failure due to behavioral issues, truancy, or other factors. These schools provide specialized programs aimed at addressing the individual needs of students who may not thrive in traditional educational settings. Studies show that youth in alternative schools are more likely to have experienced disciplinary actions, higher absenteeism, and challenges such as poverty, learning disabilities, or unstable home environments. However, with tailored interventions, alternative schools can help improve academic outcomes and provide a path to graduation for many of these students.
